LOSING
THE BEARD

Shaving off months (or years) of growth isn’t the same job as a normal morning shave. Do it wrong and you’ll spend a week looking patchy and feeling raw. Here’s how to do it once, properly.

Shaving off a long-established beard is closer to a small home renovation than a normal morning task. The hair is longer, denser and more resistant than anything a daily-shave razor is designed to handle in one pass, and the skin underneath hasn’t seen direct blade contact — or often direct air — in months. Rushing it with the razor you use for stubble touch-ups is exactly how men end up with patchy, irritated, uneven results that take a week to settle.

WHY A BEARD REMOVAL IS A DIFFERENT JOB

The Length Problem
Cartridges Aren’t Built for Long Hair

Standard multi-blade cartridges are designed to cut stubble and short growth, not hair that’s been growing for weeks or months. Pointing a fresh cartridge directly at a full beard clogs it within a few strokes, forcing you to push harder — which is how nicks and skin damage happen. The hair needs to come down in length before a razor should touch it.

The Skin Problem
Skin Underneath Is Unconditioned

Skin that’s spent months under a beard hasn’t been exposed to razor contact, UV, or normal air circulation. It’s often noticeably paler, sometimes flaky, and more reactive than the skin around it. That skin needs a gentler first shave and a genuine moisturising routine afterwards — not the same product you’d use on skin that shaves daily.

The Blade-Wear Problem
One Cartridge Won’t Survive the Job

Cutting through a full beard dulls a cartridge far faster than normal daily use — often within a single session. Trying to finish the whole job on one blade means the final third of your face gets shaved with an already-degraded edge, which is where most of the irritation from a beard removal actually comes from.

The Shape Problem
You Can’t See Your Jawline Yet

Years of beard growth can hide genuine changes in jawline and neckline that you’ll only see once it’s gone. Rushing straight to a fully clean shave in one sitting removes any chance to adjust or reconsider before it’s irreversible for the next few days.

THE BEARD REMOVAL PROCESS — DO IT IN THIS ORDER

1
Trim It Down First — Clippers, Not Razor

Use clippers or scissors to bring the beard down to roughly stubble length before a razor comes anywhere near it. This single step prevents almost all of the clogging and dragging that ruins a first attempt at a full beard shave.

Action: Trim to under 5mm before opening a fresh cartridge.
2
Shower and Soften for Longer Than Usual

Give the now-shortened stubble extra time under warm water — a couple of minutes longer than your normal shave prep. Denser hair that’s spent months growing needs more softening time than the stubble it grew from.

Action: Double your usual prep time on removal day.
3
Change the Blade Halfway Through

Don’t try to finish a full beard removal on one cartridge. Switch to a fresh blade once you’re through the densest areas — usually the jaw and chin — so the rest of the face isn’t shaved with a cartridge that’s already lost its edge.

Action: Have at least two fresh cartridges ready before you start.
4
Moisturise the “New” Skin Properly

The skin that’s just been uncovered has effectively been indoors for months. Treat it like it has been — a proper balm or moisturiser, and some caution with direct sun or wind for the first day or two, will settle it far faster than leaving it bare.

Action: Apply balm immediately, and again before bed on day one.

THE FIRST WEEK AFTER THE BIG SHAVE

Day
1
Expect Some Redness — Don’t Re-Shave It

Mild redness across the jaw is normal after removing months of growth in one sitting. Resist the urge to go back over it “to tidy up” — let it settle for 24 hours first.

Day
2–3
Light Touch-Up Pass Only

A gentle single pass to tidy any missed patches is fine now, with a fresh blade and full prep. Avoid pressing on areas that are still settling.

Day
4–7
Back to a Normal Daily Routine

By day four or five, the newly uncovered skin has largely caught up and a standard daily shave routine — fresh blade every 5–7 shaves, full prep, balm after — can resume as normal.

WHAT TO GET RIGHT BEFORE YOU START

01
Never Skip the Trim Stage

Every avoidable disaster in a beard removal comes from putting a razor straight to long, untrimmed hair. Ten minutes with clippers first saves the whole shave.

02
Stock Blades Before You Start, Not During

Running out of a fresh cartridge halfway through the densest part of the beard is a bad place to discover you’re out. Check your supply the night before.

03
Do It When You Have a Free Evening

A proper beard removal, done in stages with breaks, takes longer than a normal shave. Don’t attempt it as a rushed five-minute job before heading out.

BEFORE vs AFTER — DOING IT PROPERLY

✗ The Rushed Attempt

  • Razor straight onto a full-length beard
  • One cartridge for the entire face
  • Normal, quick shave prep only
  • Bare skin left unmoisturised after
  • Immediate re-shave of any red patches

✓ The Proper Removal

  • Trimmed to stubble first with clippers
  • Fresh cartridge swapped in halfway
  • Extended warm-water prep beforehand
  • Balm applied immediately and before bed
  • 24 hours given before any touch-up

The Verdict
TRIM FIRST. TWO BLADES MINIMUM. MOISTURISE PROPERLY.

A beard removal isn’t a five-minute job with your regular razor. Trim it down with clippers first, budget for at least two fresh cartridges, extend your prep time, and treat the newly uncovered skin like it needs looking after — because it does. Get those four things right and the reveal is clean the first time, not something you’re still fixing a week later.
