Movember has a way of turning a good idea into a questionable moustache by week two. The good news is that tidying one isn’t hard. A few minutes with a comb, scissors and a razor is enough to keep it looking intentional. Movember is the annual November campaign that raises awareness of men’s health, and growing a moustache is how many men take part.

What You Need

The comb
A Fine-Tooth Comb

Combing shows you the true length and separates the hairs, so you can see what needs trimming.

The trim
Small Scissors or a Trimmer

Scissors give you the most control over length. A trimmer is quicker for the overall shape.

The edges
A Razor for the Lines

A sharp cartridge with a pivoting head keeps the edges crisp and the skin comfortable.

The finish
Cream or Gel and a Balm

Cream protects the skin around the lip. A balm afterwards keeps it calm.

How to Tidy a Moustache, Step by Step

1
Comb It Down

Start with dry hair and comb the moustache straight down over your lip. This shows you its true length and reveals any stray or uneven hairs.

Action: Always comb before you cut.
2
Trim the Length

Cut along the top of the comb, taking off any hair that hangs over your lip. Take off a little at a time. You can always trim more, but you can’t put it back.

Action: Work from the centre outwards, checking both sides match.
3
Define the Upper Line

Tidy the skin above the moustache, between your nose and the hair, so the shape looks deliberate. Pull the skin gently taut, and use short strokes.

Action: Use a sharp blade with light pressure, because the skin here is thin.
4
Clean Up the Corners

Remove stray hairs on the cheeks near the ends of the moustache, so the edges are even on both sides.

Action: Check in the mirror from the front, not just the side.
5
Rinse and Moisturise

Rinse with cool water, pat dry, and apply a balm to the skin around the moustache. The upper lip can be sensitive.

Action: Use an alcohol-free balm.

Choose Your Shape

01
Natural

Follow the lip line and remove only the strays. It’s the lowest-effort option and suits most face shapes.

02
Classic and Neat

Trim the length evenly just above the lip, with tidy edges. A good all-rounder for work and weekends.

03
Defined and Bold

Keep more length and take extra care over the lines. This one needs the most regular tidying.

Common Moustache Mistakes

✗ The Common Mistakes

  • Trimming wet. Wet hair stretches, then springs back shorter.
  • Cutting too much in one go
  • Shaving the upper line too high
  • Using a worn blade near the lip
  • Skipping the comb

✓ The Better Way

  • Trim dry, after combing
  • Small cuts, checking as you go
  • Following the natural line
  • A fresh blade for the edges
  • Comb first, every time

Keep the Skin Comfortable

The skin around your upper lip is thin, and a moustache can make it itchy or dry, especially in the first couple of weeks. Moisturise daily, avoid alcohol-based products, and use light pressure when you shave around the edges. If the skin is red or irritated, our sensitive skin guide has a two-week reset, and How to Shave Properly covers technique for tricky areas like the upper lip.

Frequently asked questions

How often should I trim my moustache?

As often as it takes to look tidy. While you’re growing one, a quick trim and tidy every few days is common.

Should I trim a moustache wet or dry?

Dry and combed. Wet hair stretches and looks longer than it is, so you can easily cut too much.

Can I use a cartridge razor around my moustache?

Yes, for the edges. Use light pressure and short strokes, and take extra care around the lip.

What if I want to shave it off after Movember?

See our Movember shave-off checklist.

Can I try SmartShave without a long commitment?

Yes. Start with the £9.99 starter kit. You can change, delay or cancel your subscription at any time for free.

The Verdict
Comb. Trim. Define. Keep it comfortable.

A tidy moustache comes down to a comb, a steady hand and a sharp blade for the edges. Take it slowly, trim dry, and look after the skin underneath.
