YOUR MOUSTACHE
Whether you’re growing for Movember or keeping one all year, here’s how to trim it, define the edges and keep the skin around it comfortable.
Movember has a way of turning a good idea into a questionable moustache by week two. The good news is that tidying one isn’t hard. A few minutes with a comb, scissors and a razor is enough to keep it looking intentional. Movember is the annual November campaign that raises awareness of men’s health, and growing a moustache is how many men take part.
What You Need
Combing shows you the true length and separates the hairs, so you can see what needs trimming.
Scissors give you the most control over length. A trimmer is quicker for the overall shape.
A sharp cartridge with a pivoting head keeps the edges crisp and the skin comfortable.
Cream protects the skin around the lip. A balm afterwards keeps it calm.
How to Tidy a Moustache, Step by Step
Start with dry hair and comb the moustache straight down over your lip. This shows you its true length and reveals any stray or uneven hairs.
Action: Always comb before you cut.Cut along the top of the comb, taking off any hair that hangs over your lip. Take off a little at a time. You can always trim more, but you can’t put it back.
Action: Work from the centre outwards, checking both sides match.Tidy the skin above the moustache, between your nose and the hair, so the shape looks deliberate. Pull the skin gently taut, and use short strokes.
Action: Use a sharp blade with light pressure, because the skin here is thin.Remove stray hairs on the cheeks near the ends of the moustache, so the edges are even on both sides.
Action: Check in the mirror from the front, not just the side.Rinse with cool water, pat dry, and apply a balm to the skin around the moustache. The upper lip can be sensitive.
Action: Use an alcohol-free balm.Choose Your Shape
Follow the lip line and remove only the strays. It’s the lowest-effort option and suits most face shapes.
Trim the length evenly just above the lip, with tidy edges. A good all-rounder for work and weekends.
Keep more length and take extra care over the lines. This one needs the most regular tidying.
Common Moustache Mistakes
✗ The Common Mistakes
- Trimming wet. Wet hair stretches, then springs back shorter.
- Cutting too much in one go
- Shaving the upper line too high
- Using a worn blade near the lip
- Skipping the comb
✓ The Better Way
- Trim dry, after combing
- Small cuts, checking as you go
- Following the natural line
- A fresh blade for the edges
- Comb first, every time
Keep the Skin Comfortable
The skin around your upper lip is thin, and a moustache can make it itchy or dry, especially in the first couple of weeks. Moisturise daily, avoid alcohol-based products, and use light pressure when you shave around the edges. If the skin is red or irritated, our sensitive skin guide has a two-week reset, and How to Shave Properly covers technique for tricky areas like the upper lip.
