Short answer: to shave your neck without irritation, shave it last so the hair has softened longest, work out which way the hair grows, use short light strokes with the grain, keep to one pass, and finish with an alcohol-free balm.

Neck skin is thinner and more sensitive than your cheeks, and the hair often grows in several directions. That is why it is where razor burn and bumps appear first. A few small changes fix most of it.

Why is the neck so sensitive?

The skin is thin, it moves a lot as you turn your head, and hair can swirl in different directions. Shirt collars add friction afterwards. Together these make the neck easy to irritate.

Map your grain first

Leave a day or two of stubble, then run your fingertips over your neck. Hair feels smooth in the direction it grows and rough against it. For many men the pattern is roughly like this, but check your own.

The neck routine

1
Shave the neck last

Leave it until the end so the hair has had longer to soften under warm water and cream.

Action: Cheeks first, neck last.
2
Prep well

Wash with warm water and apply an even layer of cream or gel. See the three-step prep routine.

Action: Do not shave dry skin.
3
Go with the grain

Short, light strokes in the direction the hair grows. A pivoting head helps the blade follow the curves of your neck.

Action: One pass is enough.
4
Pull skin gently

Tilt your head and stretch the skin lightly. Do not pull it tight.

Action: Gentle, not tight.
5
Finish properly

Rinse with cool water, pat dry and apply an alcohol-free balm. Change your blade soon after. See how often to change your blade.

Action: Balm straight after.
If your neck bumps up

Redness is usually razor burn, small bumps a day later are often ingrown hairs. Our razor burn guide and sensitive skin guide cover both.

Frequently asked questions

How do I shave my neck without razor burn?

Shave it last, use warm water and plenty of cream, go with the grain with light pressure, do one pass and apply an alcohol-free balm.

Which direction should I shave my neck?

With the grain, which varies. Run your fingers over the stubble to find the direction where it feels smooth.

Why does my neck get bumps after shaving?

Thin skin, changing hair direction, a dull blade and pressing too hard are the usual causes. Bumps a day later may be ingrown hairs.

Should I shave my neck first or last?

Last. The hair has more time to soften, which reduces tugging.

What razor is best for a sensitive neck?

A sharp, fresh cartridge with a pivoting head helps it follow the curves. Replace it about once a week.

The Verdict
Neck last. Map the grain. Keep it light.

Treat the neck as its own job: more prep, less pressure and one careful pass.
